My Dear Mr. Markham:
Thank you very much for your kind response to my letter. I am quite certain that “The Muse of Labor” will prove to be in every way suited to our needs. Thank you also for your good words concerning “The Comrade”. More and more the cheery words from kind friends like yourself confirms my belief that in raising the standard of our journalism somewhat we are rendering the Cause a good service. Often dear old William Morris used to say to me “I hope, Spargo, you will live to see an artistic Socialist paper worthy of the great ideal we have.” , and I am hopeful now that we will – “The Comrade” is a step in that direction. When I was asked last year to outline a policy for the paper and to write its prospectus, it was with some fear that I did so, for I had too often attended “funerals” of Socialist papers. But I believe that this time the “funeral” will be long delayed.
Yours Very Sincerely
J. Spargo
