Dear Mr. Markham:
Your welcome letter came several days ago and I have been awaiting the proof sheets of this book. Ferguson, who was to review it, must, I fear, be headed off, as I now see that he is radically opposed to anything and everything that hints of socialism. Dr. Taylor (whose latest verse, or an extract from it I enclose) is very sympathetic, scholarly and would get the ear of the people, I think, so that if you have no objection I may send it to him. Perhaps you heed cleaning and “hurry review” but please to make haste to send me the book in any shape you may have it. If Dr. Taylor declines, I can get David Starr Jordan, but he is not so sympathetic, says you have been led astray by your own writings. However, that was what he told me privately, and he referred to socialism; but he would not fail to appreciate the good things in the book. Write often and tell me what you are writing or planning. I am grateful to you for many favors, and your poems, which I often read, have helped to keep me “on left,” as Chaucer says of Griselda.
My respects to Mrs. Markham.
It will be cold – so cold – in the east soon. Can’t you, Mrs. M. and the boy come and stay with us this winter? We have plenty of room and all the good books you can read during your stay
Yours as ever
Millard
