Dear Dr. Stoughton,
We have not received any mail for three weeks, but I trust that God has kept you well. By the time you receive this note, you will be preparing to leave for your new work. My very best wishes Dr. Stoughton!
At present I’m with a rifle company of the 7th Division (APO #7) on Okinawa Shima. The part of the island that hasn’t been laid waste is very beautiful, far more so than the Hawaiians or Marshalls. The climate is temperate but the nights are quite chilly.
The 7th is a veteran outfit having been in the Aleutians, the Hawaiians, the Marshalls, and the Philippines.
We are back for a few days rest now. Hot food, sleep, blankets, and a chance to fight back at the cooties that make us look as tho we had the measles. I have the combat infantry badge, earned partly I suspect, for scratching so many lice to death. At any rate, my education as a chemist came in handy, and was able to stand the stench at the front better than the other men!
Please give my fondest regards to Mrs. Stoughton, Jeanne, and frisky Donald.
Yours very sincerely,
Roland
