Corporal Irving Green
4th Mapping Squadron
March Field
Riverside, California
Dear Irving:
I didn’t know that you were in the Army Air Forces, and was, therefore, glad to hear from you.
Certainly, I thoroughly understand your financial situation, and we had not expected that any of you lads who are in service, would be able to do anything in the campaign. It was good, however, to have your encouragement and I appreciate that thoroughly.
We have a rather large summer school this year, and everything is moving along very rapidly. We are, of course, very uncertain about next fall, but we shall manage to steer through somehow.
Cordial greetings from all of us.
Sincerely yours,
C.C. Stoughton,
President.

TENTH PHOTO RECONNAISSANCE SQUADRON
PETERSON FIELD - COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.
February 22, 1943
Dear Prof:
Since I am finally becoming annoyed by the delay of the Wagner Bulletin and noticed reaching me I must write this belated letter now. The cause of the delay was no fault of yours or anyone else’s at Wagner. It was caused by the circuitous route of such materials in reaching me. Even though I am stationed here in Colorado for seven months now my mail from Wagner is yet addressed to March Field, California. Since I enjoy hearing from Wagner I would appreciate it if you would see to it that my address is changed on your records.
It certainly was a thrill to read news of so many Wagnerians in the service.
[Page 2]
Of many I had no idea they were in the armed forces, and of those whose duty I was aware of I had no idea of where they might possibly be.
It might interest you to hear that I ran into an old Wagnerian here at the Air Base many months. Last July or August I was surprised to meet Ockie Blomquist in the uniform of a second lieutenant, a flyer in our Air Corps. That was the only meeting we had and I am interested in his present whereabouts.
My duties here at the present are in photography. I am lab chief of the photographic laboratory of our outfit. I have trained and sent into action many men and hope to follow them to more active zones in the not too far distant future.
Give my regards to Doc. Davidheiser, Doc. Helfelbower, Herb Sutter, and any others who might remember me.
Sincerely,
(Tech./Sergeant) Irving Green

T. Sgt. Irving Green
10th Photo Squadron
A.A.B.
Colorado Springs, Colorado
Dear Irving:
I am delighted that you finally became irritated enough about late letters to write me, because I have wondered what you are doing and the news about your program was most interesting.
Ockie Blomquist is now in Africa, I understand, as an aerial photographer. That is probably the reason you met him out at your field.
I feel an especial interest in your work, because I was in the 21st aerial photography section in the last war.
All of us send our greetings. Best of luck to you in whatever you do.
Sincerely yours,
C.C. Stoughton,
President.

Philippine Islands
3 April 1945
Dear Prof:
A few days ago the February issue of the Bulletin caught up with me and with a feeling mixed with pride and surprise I read of your appointment to the Stewardship Secretary of the U.L.C.A. I am proud, not for myself, but for Wagner that you were called and I was surprised for I have learned to think of the names “Stoughton” and “Wagner” as synonymous. That you must leave I am sorry.
Accept my congratulations and since I will not be in a position to bid you adieu on July 1st I must use this means to say to you and Mrs. Stoughton, “Good bye and good luck”.
Sincerely,
Irving Green, ‘37

Dear Prof,
Got your letter of 30 July and believe me prof it’s really swell hearing from you. Thanks for the compliment but I don’t think I really enjoy all that flattery because I don’t feel I deserve it. I just put my thoughts on paper and it’s really the way I feel.
Gosh, you know it’s really swell to know how you felt about “us guys” while we were up there. I guess I never did realize how swell it was of you not to see too much. You know I’ve got about the same kind of a job you’ve got. You are right now I’m a Camp Commander with close to a hundred fellas to watch over and I know just how it feels. There are many times you have to overlook; things you wouldn’t ordinarily let pass by. Of course you realize that in the military service, especially the Marine Corps, it is a little different but the situation is still the same.
You really needed the rest, you so well deserve it ‘cause I can imagine how you felt after a strenuous workout of trying to run Wagner under these wartime conditions.
You know prof you put into words, thoughts that I’ve had for a long time but never could really say it. All the boasts and escapades are entirely true but I can’t get over the way you expressed it, it’s really marvelous.
Thanks for the dope on the K’s. Of course, it’s only between you and I. You and I see eye to eye on so many things. The frankness with which we express ourselves seems almost unreal, doesn’t it? Maybe it’s that this mess has made us both a little more understanding in many respects. I’m beginning to talk in circles now I guess but there are many times I thought I was due for a ram from you prof. At times I didn’t realize tho what a swell Joe you were and that what you were doing was really for the good of the most concerned.
Both the Rappolds fooled me completely. I had ‘em both figured as being true blue but I guess I called ‘em wrong again.
So Jeanne is now an Ensign doing communication work. Glad she seems to like it. And I know what you mean about the climate. We don’t have the most enjoyable set up in the world either. But I will say we have air conditioning. Yeah, you get air on one condition – you bring it in yourself. Now just what brought that on?
[Page 2]
Was glad to get all the news of all the guys. You seem to be the only one who knows what’s going on with all the people so I guess I’ll have to rely on you.
Jimmy La Hart is still out on one of the other islands and Walt Boecher is expected out hear some day, some place. To hear that wife of his tell it you’d think he was coming out on a special mission for the president himself.
Marie’s brother has made several trips across the Atlantic as an ensign in the Merchant Marine. Right now he’s studying some line of pharmacy because his skipper recommended him after some work he did in a few scrapes.
Saw Chaplain Yaeger. He’s in the sick bay with kidney trouble of some kind. Seems to be a reaction of concussion suffered on Entiewitok [Eniwetok] and Kawajelen [Kwajalein]. He’s really a swell fellow prof. you were right. He’s a Marine Corps chaplain you know. He was with the 6th Marines and from what he tells has seen his share of this mess. You know I was really surprised and pleased to run into a chaplain, graduate of Wagner, especially in the Corps. We just shot the bull and I had to leave all too soon. I think I’ll try to see him again.
Well prof, that’s about all for now. This writing leaves things okay on this end, hope it finds you that way on your end. Best regards to all and God bless you all.
Most sincerely,
Eric

Hi ya Prof,
Will answer your letter of the 24th which I got yesterday. I guess that every once in a while the mail service is really “hot” and we get our mail back and forth in good order.
I’ll try to tell you something that happened to me. About two weeks ago was my birthday and it was swell to get cards from home and all that but the best thing was a little surprise party my men had for me. There were no presents handed out or anything but it was really swell feeling to know that the men thought that much of a guy. After the usual ball game in the evening we all came back when the chow gong sounded. We assembled in the mess hall and the cooks brought in coffee and a cake with one candle. You know a day in the galley for these boys is at least 12 hours and it was a lot of extra trouble and as I said before it sure gave me a funny feeling, something that just can’t be put into words.
Glad to hear Jean is doing so well. It sure helps a lot to be in something you really enjoy and are interested in. And talk about being proud of hearing about Jimmie Robb, well I was just like a little kid with a new toy. I called a couple of my N.C.O.’s and the chief pharmacist’s mate in and told them all about it! I guess that all the boys from Wagner are doing all right, coming through the way I know you’ll be proud of all of us.
Jumbo shoved off for some place. I don’t know just where he is right now or where he is going. I got the word through another officer since I hadn’t heard from him in a long while.
The camp I’m in charge of is a convalescent camp, being rebuilt at the moment. Most of the men here are casuals, some with the purple heart and a silver star on it. The stories they have to tell are quite interesting, if not a little gruesome. Wish I could tell you about it, but I guess the censor would object.
Haven’t seen Lt. Yaeger again but will try to soon.
Well Prof, I guess this’ll be all again for a while. Best regards to all “on the hill” and write again when you have time.
Sincerely,

53 Hamilton St.
Potsdam, N. Y.
Sept 29, 1944
Dear Prof,
It has been a long time since we contacted each other, but you probably learned of some of my activities through Dean Kleintop, with whom I have been in fairly close contact in the past year.
When we last communicated with each other, you said it would be possible to postpone my financial obligation to Wagner until I felt I could meet it. The army has been playing games with me long enough and this has created a great deal of maladjustment and consequent expense. My change of position from Westinghouse to Public Health served me well, though it was inconvenient. I have been able to fulfill the qualifications for an A.M. Degree, but I cannot have a degree until my account is settled there.
This fall I accepted a teaching position in Potsdam, New York for several reasons. My family has made every endeavor to create further havoc with my life and I desired to remove myself from possible further contact. It is not ideal to live with in-laws, and I need not tell you the many complications such an arrangement creates. Now I am settled in the St. Lawrence Valley in a modest teaching position at a modest salary, but I find life much more pleasant here. I believe it will be possible to resume payment of my obligation, which I believe, amounts to $277 — as soon as this transition is completely effected.
You can imagine the cost of transportation of an apartment of furniture 400 miles today, if a one-way train ticket costs $10- per person. If anyone
[Page 2]
tries to tell you the fable of cheaper cost of living in this part of the country, don’t be as naïve as I.
Enclosed you will find an application for a Teacher’s license, which is essential to the security of my present and any future teaching positions. I would appreciate it if you would have someone fill out the appropriate parts of the application and forward it to the Bursar of Teacher’s College, Columbia University, where the process will be completed.
Enclosed you will also find a few small pictures of Susan Jane, the first of the Harold, Helen Hammond clan. These pictures were taken in June of this year. Since this time she has developed considerably and now has quite a bit of hair.
Helen is in good health and sends her best wishes to you and all our friends at Wagner. If you find time, I should enjoy hearing from you. Love till later.
Ever your sincere friend,
Harold Hammond
P.S. I’m moving next week (this apartment is too small for us), which accounts for the difference of address. Let me know about costs of transcripts and I’ll send you the money immediately.
Hal

Hi Prof,
In checking through my correspondence I find my writing a bit behind schedule. I am stationed in Italy, flying missions over Europe. That is all we are allowed to say in our work, however when the war is over it should prove exceedingly interesting to a History Prof. Life here is as pleasant as can be expected in the war theater. We do manage to run into the enemy, but so far I’ve none to my credit. By the way my wife is living with my folks in S.I. Best regards to you and your staff.

Rome 8 P.M.
Hi Prof,
Just a few lines to say hello and let you in on a surprise. Today as I was flying to Rome I chanced to mention Staten Island. A Lt. sitting next to me said, “I know it well I’ve been there.” “What part of the island?” says I, (tech. I enquired). “Wagner College he replied." Yes Prof, he is a former Wagner student named Lt. Novak, he is in the same outfit as I and I’ve known him several months but just found out about his connections today. He is returning to the states shortly.
We fly C-47 and are attached to 60 Troop Carrier Group, 12 Troop Carrier Squadron operating from Italy. Yes, we saw a bit of the French Invasion. Greeting to the faculty and students.

Dear Prof,
Stopped in a nearby town for lunch and met Waddie Procci a lieut. in the Medical Corps. Had a pleasant chat for a few moments, but had to be off in our separate routes before we had chance to trade much news.
The continent is about the way indicated by Time and Ernie Pyle, and life generally interesting in the unique way of the Maudlin cartoon.
Hope that you are doing your share to fight the unfortunate and somewhat untimely civilian optimism that I fear is sweeping the country. Am inclined to think that this false optimism is in relation to how close one is to home.
My sincere best wishes to you and Mrs. Stoughton

Dear Dr. Stoughton,
Greetings from one who has followed your activities with sincere interest through the Wagner Bulletin but has remained silent these past several months. Congratulations on your new appointment to the office of stewardship secretary of the ULCA. Know you must have experienced considerable inner conflict in deciding to leave Wagner. However, your services there have been many and now your opportunities for service have become increased and expanded. Viewing this new venture

from its beginning must be a challenging experience for you. May you find great satisfaction in your new tasks.
My life this past year has been very full and as a consequence, happy. I’m teaching music in Elbridge, N.Y. about 14 miles west of Syracuse. It is easily accessible being located on Route 5 — the main Greyhound east-to-west highway. I stay in Elbridge from Monday to Friday – living with 7 other young teachers – and

the State Police! Let me hasten to explain myself - Trooper Smith of the State Police has his office and living quarters downstairs in our establishment. Consequently, we are well-protected and usually receive all the exciting news of the surrounding country-side well before the rest of the community becomes thusly enlightened.
I’m very fond of my pupils, enjoy my colleagues, and challenged by my work, have experienced much fellowship in the community. Have 2 bands with a third “on the way” – 2 choruses, a community chorus, a church choir,

an Intermediate L.L. at home Friday nights. Piano lessons and University classes on Sat. — and so it goes. You know what it is like to be involved in a ceaseless round of activities. In spite of it all — or maybe because of it all - I still maintain life is good — though sometimes a bit “too much with us.”
Often think of A. Schweitzer and his marvelous outlook. Thanks heaps for the loan of his autobiography. I fear it was sent to you without a word of explanation or thanks. I deeply appreciated the privilege of being able to read this fine book. Had a letter the other day from the A. Schweitzer Fellowship. Portions

of a recent letter from him were quoted. He is involved in a tremendous number of routine duties such as supervising care of medicines and instruments (so much of this is irreplaceable), supervising harvesting, hoeing and caring for crops, starting the motors at the hospital each morning, etc. He gives these as reasons why he couldn’t take a vacation as was suggested by some of his American friends. He ended this paragraph by saying that when he is doctoring or in the evening when he is playing his piano with the organ pedals given him by the Bach Society of Paris when he first went to Africa, or when he is studying philosophy late at night,

the humdrum tasks of his day are forgotten.
Oh, to live so monumental and simple an existance as this! It’s something to achieve toward. My life sometimes becomes somewhat frantic and futile. Oftimes I neglect putting first things first. Pleasures of the moment so often upset my good intentions. Someone once said, “The Righteous but weak will is the world’s greatest tragedy.” How true.
The last portion of this epistle has been penned while proctoring a last period study hall. Consequently, it has been

interrupted often by tours of inspection, questions, necessary comments at the proper time, etc. Apologies are, therefore, extended for the quality of thought and legibility.
Did want you to know I’m very happy for you in your new work, Dr. Stoughton, and wish you every success.
Sincere regards,
Doris Kimman
