New Guinea
March 12, 1945
Dear "Doc" Stoughton,
I'm still on New Guinea but am now in a different part. This place is sort of a "Soldiers Tropical Dream." We work one week & are off the next. The week we work, we only work every other day & for only 4 to 6 hrs. per day. We are right on the shore & have a beautiful clean beach to swim at. Looking around one would never think that fierce battles were once fought here.
Am taking an Armed Force Institute course as I said I would. I am studying Elementary French thru the Extension division of the University of California at Berkely. The Institute pays half of the fee and I pay the other half. Books are included.
Professor Meylan one of the co-writers of the text is
[Page 2]
the professor in charge of the course. Thus far I've found it rather easy & very interesting. Upon completion of French one I plan to take either French two or Psychology one. It is really a wonderful opportunity to "G.I. Joe" It is too bad that more young men do not take advantage of this opportunity. Men can take the regular $2.00 A.F.I. Course or the University Extension Courses. I chose the Univ. of Cal. as I thought it was a very good Univ & also that I could correspond the rapidest with them.
I am wondering what is going on at Wagner. I imagine most of my fellow students have either received their degrees or have left for the Armed Forces.
How is Mrs. Stoughton? Often I think of her & those
[Page 3]
wonderful lectures on "Living with others" she gives to incoming freshmen. I found in my first year of Army Life that many grown men & growing men are in need of a complete course on "Living with others."
I have a buddy, a Sgt Busch of St. Louis who goes to Chapel with me every Sunday we have the opportunity to. Last Sunday we hitch hiked about 4 or 5 miles to attend Protestant Services. We did not mind that as we felt it our duty to go.
There I noticed two native boys attending Services. I thought it wonderful to see them there. All they wore was a dirty cloth tied around their waist. It just proved that no matter your color, creed or standing in life we can all & should all
[Page 4]
worship God in our own humble way. I am sitting in the Red Cross "Huba Huba Hut" as the Red Cross writing and game building is called. "Huba-Huba" is G.I. for "hurry-hurry." In my last station the called the Red Cross Club the "Kunai Korner," Kunai for the "Kunai Grass" found in this area. It is a very tall grass, sometimes as high as 8 to 9 ft tall.
At 8 P.M. on Monday nights the Red Cross girls serve Hot Coffee & doughnuts. Other evenings at 8 P.M. they serve ice-cold coke.
It is about time for Coffee so I'll end this short letter hoping that we will soon have peace.

Manila, P.I.
31 July, 1945
Dear Doc Stoughton,
I wanted to write to you sooner in thanks for that wonderful letter of March 25.
Yes, it was a great blow to me, so many miles from home, to hear of the passing on of my Beloved Mother. I have the consolation, however, that She died with the minimum of suffering, and that She is now in a World of Peace & Happiness. I want to thank you and your family for your sympathy in that most tragic hour.
As you can see from my heading I'm now in Manaila. I have finally received an assignment. It is to Headquarters 14th Anti-Aircraft Command. I am not working with guns or other instruments, except for my fountain pen.
[Page 2]
I am what is known as a locater file clerk. I am working in the Adjutant General's section. I enjoy my work & find it interesting. This monring as I'm not very busy I decided I'd write a few letters.
Manila - "The Queen of the Far East" that's what she used to be. Now she is nothing but a mass of rubble and chaos (financial). When purchaing food or some other item one doesn't figure in centavos but in pesos. The peso is supposed to be worth 50 cents but in my opinion it isn't worth half that much. Many of the so-called homes are in a deplorable shape - thatched rooves or perhaps corrugated metal; sometimes even thatched walls - on the whole an unsanitary mess.
As for furthering my education my French course is about 1/3 completed. I have applied for the Armed Forces
[Page 3]
Institute on Psychology & Life.
I am hoping to again become a member of "The Family on the Hill." It gives me great pleasure being able to say that I attended Wagner College.
Words are few & the news has given out. I end this brief letter with regards to all -
As always

Nice, July 23, 1945
Dear Dr. Stoughton,
The circular and your note caught up with me several weeks ago — and I am sorry to have been so very lax in answering them both. I am happy to enclose a check for one hundred dollars payable to Wagner College, and I hope it reaches you before you leave. It’s quite impossible to think of Wagner without you — but I know you must feel strongly about your new work.
I have been in Nice for just two and a half months now — and I’ve already met two Wagnerians. Ed Jones was in Cannes, the officer’s leave area, for a seven-day leave in May and I saw him walking down the street as I was leaning out a bus window. Bill Goelnitz tapped me on the shoulder in the Red Cross club in Nice several weeks ago and we spent an evening “reminiscing” and wondering at the trite but true “smallness” of the world.
Red Cross work is still far too new for me to give a really good description — but in general we run a recreational program for the fifteen thousand men who spend
[Page 2]
seven-day leaves in Nice. It’s tremendously interesting and satisfying — a good combination for work.
Please give my very best wishes to Mrs. Staughton and Jean and Don. It’s Wagner’s loss — but I hope, too, that you will have the greatest possible success in your new position.
Sincerely,
Peggy Buck

Dear Dr. Stoughton -
Thanks very much for the Bulletins I've been receiving. Reading about all my old friends usually brings a spell of nostalgia, but I'm sincerely happy for their successes, and to know what's going on "up on the hill."
This letter is primarily one, however, of business. You see, I am very anxious to take some Extension courses under the Armed Forces Institute program and the question has come up as to accredition. What I would like to know is just which courses, and taken thru which schools, will be accepted for me by Wagner. I've a few required courses still wanting for my degree, which I would like to wipe off my record, so that when I return to finish, I can go right on with my major. I intend, also, to wait with my German, which
[Page 2]
I made a bit of a mess of a couple of years ago. I know I need a year of Philosophy, but don't remember just what all else. Would it be possible for you to provide this information for me?
I'm truly sorry that my correspondence these days has been lacking so badly. Reasons, of course, become excuses so I won't attempt anything beyond a humble apology. I assure you, tho, that I'm doing my best to make the most of all my opportunities and experiences. I've had some really wonderful ones in London and on the English coutryside, in Paris, in Belgium, and at the different places I've been stationed here.
Hoping this finds you and yours all well and happy.
Very sincerely, and with kindest personal regards,
George

Dear Prof-
It was good to get the pleasant note on your Christmas card and I wished at the time that I could have paid you and the college a visit at Christmas time. I thought particularly of the Chapel services and the informal evening parties, either at Cunard Hall or in one of the faculty houses, that I associate with the holiday season. I did get a three day vacation, so to speak, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, but in attending a family get-to-gether near Philadelphia there was not time to run up to Staten Island. It has been widely observed that this was a sober holiday period despite the lavish spending spree in which the nation engaged. I have heard that you had one particularly grievous problem at that time with the Sociology Department. From what I have heard, I can’t understand it all, but I did wish that you had not had to be saddle with such a situation.
The family is well and flourishing mightily. Joan enjoys her school despite the peculiar and very casual way in which several of her teachers work her. Today we all went ice skating, the second time this year we’ve done it. We miss the lake that used to be so near our house on Staten Island. Lydia is pretty well occupied with the vigorous young one, Betsey. I don’t seem to get a great deal accomplished outside of my routine work. There is always plenty of it to do so I frequently bring some of it home for working over at night. A few times I’ve not gotten around to working at home, as for example today when the weather was so fine, I had to be outside. There’s so much reading to be done, I also welcome the chance to
[Page 2]
rest my eyes a bit.
My work is very interesting, for many of the records of overseas transportation (military) are getting back to Washington. So in addition to correspondence between Washington and the various overseas theaters and interviews with men who have come back on a new assignment or have made a trip to some of the fronts, I have the standard type of material one uses for research work, I see and deal with a great many men who are engaged in operational work and they have an operations man’s point of view, not a historian’s. A few that are interested in historical work seem to feel that a historical treatise can be gotten up like an operations account or plan. To write almost contemporary history, however, with the time limitations they put on you (so much seems to be expected to be turned out in a given period) and with the limitations of available documents, the fallibility of men’s memories, and the preoccupation of key men, places a greater premium than ever on careful weighing of material that is available. I’ve had some pretty good arguments with authorities over the fact that nothing should be written, though collections of documents and studying can be proceeding, until it is possible to do a reasonably thorough job, for otherwise the resulting product is valueless. I have been overruled, however, and given to understand that the writing must go forward. That’s what I meant by turning out work in a given time period, above.
Despite what the foregoing paragraph seems to imply, I by no means intend to imply that contemporary historical work here is valueless. While it lacks the obvious benefits of more leisurely and complete research, it profits by certain benefits that come from contacting men who are engaged in the work and whose memories, while fallible, are nevertheless fresher than they will be twenty years hence. Having finished work on the story of Greenland and North Africa (about 275 pages of the latter) and nearly finished the Sicilian campaign, I am also working on the Italian campaign. In a few weeks I shall tackle the invasion of the Continent, a work which could take at least a year. Of course I read reports dealing with all theaters in so far as they are sent in to the Transportation Corps and not the Army top branches, as they come in, so I'm ahead to that extent. Excuse me for following an old habit and using the margins. Kindest regards to Hilda and best wishes and strength to you.
Sincerely,
Harold

Mid-Atlantic
Aug 22, 1945
Dear Mr. Stoughton,
When the ship rolls, and dips, and rises and slides again I find there is nothing like being in a horizontal position. Since my pen works less than well upside down this letter is written with the unorthodox pencil.
Yes, I am on my way to Germany via London and Brussels, and am as excited as can be about the opportunity given me to do constructive work in the first organization of International
[Page 2]
Cooperation.
UNRRA accepted my application and is sending me as an administrative officer to a Displaced Persons camp in Southern Germany. My applications was accepted rather promptly, but getting out of the Army to accept the position offered was another matter. At first my release was disapproved by reason of military necessity and it was almost two months before I managed reconsideration. I just made the last US recruited

group for European operations.
I wish to thank you again very sincerely for whatever part you had in securing my appointment. I am sure that the recommendations of my references were extremely important.
Very truly yours,
Curt Townsend

3 April 1945
Dear Prof:
A few days ago the February issue of the Bulletin caught up with me and with a feeling mixed with pride and surprise I read of your appointment to the Stewardship Secretary of the U.L.C.A. I am proud, not for myself, but for Wagner that you were called and I was surprised for I have learned to think of the names “Stoughton” and “Wagner” as synonymous. That you must leave I am sorry.
Accept my congratulations and since I will not be in a position to bid you adieu on July 1st I must use this means to say to you and Mrs. Stoughton, “Good bye and good luck”.
Sincerely,
Irving Green, ‘37

12 April 1945
Dear Dr. Stoughton,
Two weeks ago I received letters from both Dr. Davidheiser and Mr. Baez, informing me of your acceptance of the position of first stewardship secretary of the United Lutheran Church. Yesterday I finally got Wagner’s February Bulletin. First of all Prof, my heartiest congratulations!
Perhaps you remember that I have attended an Augustana Synodical convention, (the implication being that I have at least a superficial knowledge of church organization) and so have some idea of the size of the job you are undertaking. Sincerely, I don’t believe a finer man could have been elected.
Wagner has made tremendous progress to the good while you have been its president, perhaps phenomenal would be a better word. Why? Well, it hasn’t all
[Page 2]
been due to you, Prof., but to you goes the lion's share of the credit. And here of course I could make a long list of your attributes and achievements, but like Al Smith, I’ll say “look at da record”.
Mr. Baez thinks the world of you. I am afraid he is now somewhat apprehensive of Wagner’s future. I had a chance to talk to him when I was in California. Palo Alto, where he lives, is one of the prettiest little towns I have ever seen. His daughter’s health has shown considerable improvement, mainly due to California’s sunny clime. (Dean Kleintop would mutter something about being trite on that one!).
Mother and Dad are both well, and quite cheerful. Naturally, being somewhat of a nomad, I haven’t heard from them for weeks.
[Page 3]
I might mention that back in the States, (State-side as it is known here) I qualified for O.C.S., Chemical Warfare. However, my shipping order for overseas duty came first, so yours truly is a rifleman. Funny tho it might seem, they (riflemen) are pretty important over here, and I can understand Uncle Sam’s recent avariciousness in gobbling them up first. Any young fellow, in good health, being inducted in the Army now, has one chance in one hundred of not being in the infantry.
Since leaving Seattle, Washington, I have taken a few boat rides. I can assure you that the trips were a bit longer than the nickle one I used to get on the S.I. Ferry. The most important place I have been was on Oahu, the home of Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, and Waikiki Beach. The Hawaiian Islands
[Page 4]
are attractive if you don’t look too thoroughly. I was mostly interested in the type of vegetation growing there, which, as one would expect, is both abundant and varied. Sugar cane and pineapple raising are the main industries.
On one occasion, we had been out in the jungle eating c rations for too long a time to suit us. So being Epicurians, we decided to stomp off that nite and try to find some native café, even tho the menu would afford little more than monkey meat. So we went crashing thru the bushes that dark nite and finally hit one. Menu? Ham and eggs! On our way back we stumbled into a genuine native hula hula dance!
At present I am in the Mariana Islands. They are fairly large, certainly look better than some of coral atolls I have seen, but of course are not quite as well
[Page 5]
developed as Brooklyn. The nasty Nips are still dashing around in the hills in a most undignified fashion. Around about are strewn grim reminders that Sherman was a man who spoke from experience.
I am starting to pick up Pidgin English (Melensian). Although State side this may be thought of as the babblings of a Chinese laundryman, and while it would make very bad reading in an advanced English Literature class, it is definitely a very useful thing to know down under — Especially when you want to ask a native which subway to take to get to the nearest ice cream parlor.
It must have been devised by a Republican, because it does make some sense. Vis: tree = dingah; baby = pickaninny hence: fruit from a tree = pickaninny belong em dingah.
[Page 6]
hair = grass belong em head
female = mary
girl = monkey mary
boy = monkey.
They tacked an Isaac Newton however in deriving their mathematics:
one (1) = one pella
tweleve (12) = two pella ten two
one thousand (1000) = too mas [much]
The pidgin English of personal pronouns is comical:
you = you fella
I = me fella
we = us fella
everyone = altogether fella.
While the natives would never take first prize on their knowledge of Kant's "Critique of Pure Reason," they do know what to do and how to get along in the jungle sans a Saturday night pay check. This learning they have passed on to G.I.s to help win the battles against the brush.
[Page 7]
Naturally, we live fairly primatively. Not that we roam about in leopard skins, but if this were the Astor, I should most certainly complain to the manager.
The heat is fierce. An ice house would do a terrific business here.
The good thing about living out here of course, is the fact that you can give an annual Bronx cheer to the Income Tax Collector.
Now I'll have to watch my "Ps" and "Qs," especially about that adjective "good." As I remember, you spent a whole hour at Tottenville High School lecturing on the proper use of the word "good" - and there I went breaking all the rules.
Honestly, I have meant to write for some time. First of all I wanted some clean white paper and ink for my pen. I write thus to all respectable people over forty.
[Page 8]
It might interest you to know that many more men are reading the Bible than on State side. Over there the craze was Detective Mysteries, the bloodier the better. However, a man can mature mentally very rapidly. The words of Our Lord are making a deep impression on us, and is there any poetry that will bring the heart of man closer to God than the magnificent simplicity of the Psalms?
Please give my best regards to Mrs. Stoughton, Jeanne, and Donald.
And to you Prof. - my very fondest hopes and sincerest wishes.
Very truly yours,
Roland

April 1st, 1945
My dear Dr. Stoughton,
Today, more than on any other day since I have been in the army my thoughts turn back toward Wagner College. Most probably because today is Easter Sunday, one of the most religious times of the year. All of us here in camp have opened our hearts to God in the fervent prayer that the war will be over soon so that we can go get back to our families, civilian activities, etc. It is a prayer that can never be repeated too often because among soldiers, home and family are the number one topics of discussion.
But we have a war to win and from what I have seen of the army’s methods of producing soldiers I am sure that we will be victorious. At the present time, I am in the midst of my basic training which is a 15 wk. program. By the end of my training I am supposed to be a fighting infantryman and I have no doubt that I will because our training, without going into detail, is the most rugged imaginable.
[Page 2]
After basic, 95% of us will go overseas. The other 5% will be placed in O.C.S. and A.S.T.P. The only branches of A.S.T.P that are open are the Engineering and Japanese language schools. I have taken exams for the latter school and passed them but it seems that you need an especially high grade in the Army Classification Exam (130) in order to gain admittance. Since I only made 127 I am going to be given a retest. I hope I will qualify at this time.
On the whole, Army life has agreed with me. The warmth of sunny Florida is an ideal spot to train. All the fellows have healthy tans and although we gripe about the food and call the company commander names behind his back we know what we are here for and we are going to finish it. For good, we hope.
Meanwhile, I hope things are going along normally at Wagner. I know that you are going to leave and I do feel very badly about it, as do most of other students, probably. You have made Wagner a fine institution. One which I hope I will be able to return to as soon as possible.
Respectfully yours,
Burton Krimmer
P.S. Could you possibly arrange to have the Wagnerian sent to me. I would certainly appreciate it.

Dear Prof,
It has been a long time since we contacted each other, but you probably learned of some of my activities through Dean Kleintop, with whom I have been in fairly close contact in the past year.
When we last communicated with each other, you said it would be possible to postpone my financial obligation to Wagner until I felt I could meet it. The army has been playing games with me long enough and this has created a great deal of maladjustment and consequent expense. My change of position from Westinghouse to Public Health served me well, though it was inconvenient. I have been able to fulfill the qualifications for an A.M. Degree, but I cannot have a degree until my account is settled there.
This fall I accepted a teaching position in Potsdam, New York for several reasons. My family has made every endeavor to create further havoc with my life and I desired to remove myself from possible further contact. It is not ideal to live with in-laws, and I need not tell you the many complications such an arrangement creates. Now I am settled in the St. Lawrence Valley in a modest teaching position at a modest salary, but I find life much more pleasant here. I believe it will be possible to resume payment of my obligation, which I believe, amounts to $277 — as soon as this transition is completely effected.
You can imagine the cost of transportation of an apartment of furniture 400 miles today, if a one-way train ticket costs $10- per person. If anyone
[Page 2]
tries to tell you the fable of cheaper cost of living in this part of the country, don’t be as naïve as I.
Enclosed you will find an application for a Teacher’s license, which is essential to the security of my present and any future teaching positions. I would appreciate it if you would have someone fill out the appropriate parts of the application and forward it to the Bursar of Teacher’s College, Columbia University, where the process will be completed.
Enclosed you will also find a few small pictures of Susan Jane, the first of the Harold, Helen Hammond clan. These pictures were taken in June of this year. Since this time she has developed considerably and now has quite a bit of hair.
Helen is in good health and sends her best wishes to you and all our friends at Wagner. If you find time, I should enjoy hearing from you. Love till later.
Ever your sincere friend,
Harold Hammond
P.S. I’m moving next week (this apartment is too small for us), which accounts for the difference of address. Let me know about costs of transcripts and I’ll send you the money immediately.
Hal

24 September 1944
France
Dear Prof-
Thank you so much for your kind letter of 27 July. I’m glad I’m in a position to do a little something for Wagner — aside from the moral obligation in a pledge made way back — I only wish it could be more.
Since last writing the news that our unit is in France has been released — since arriving here I’ve seen and visited many of the places I’d always heard about but never expected to see — among them Chartres and Rheims Cathedrals, Fountainebleau and others – somehow one manages to get enough time when near to catch a glimpse even though mostly it’s work and plenty of it. My only hope is that some of the work contributes something to shortening this affair – sometimes I doubt it. Thanks again for your letter - it sort of relieved me to know the check had arrived — sometimes those things get snarled up. Thanks too for the Bulletin — sure appreciate getting it here.
Sincerely,
Howard
