Dear Doctor and Mrs. Stoughton,
This is my new alma mater. So far we haven't done any studying but spend our time drilling etc. This takes up the first six weeks of the course.
I met Ted Gibson five minutes after I had arrived. We see each other quite often.
Regards to all,
Henry

Dear Prof,
I'm enjoying myself immensely as a guest of Uncle Sam, at St. Petersburg, Florida. If you've ever been here, you will appreciate how I feel.
After a few days at Ft. Hayes, Columbus, Ohio, I was put into the Army Air Corps, and shipped south. I, like all the new recruits, took several mental and physical exams. I was fortunate enough to pass a Physics exam, and qualify for a place in Weather Observation. This is the first step, leading to the Meteorology division of the Air Corps. I made good use of your letter of recommendation, and it helped me in trying for this branch of the service. There were four of us selected out of six hundred men, hence I consider myself a pretty lucky guy.
I can't complain about my army life. So far, it has done me a lot
[Page 2]
of good. I feel great - physically, mentally, and morally. The regular routine we have is conducive to that good feeling.
I expect to be sent out of here, but I don't know when. As soon as there is room for me in one of the weather schools I will go. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying Florida, with its wonderful climate, and hoping I can stay for the rest of the winter. Kindest regards to Mrs. Stoughton.
Sincerely,
Hector Pernetti

On the Banks of the Rhine,
Germany - 20 March 1945
Dear Prof,
The February "Bulletin" is at hand, and the news of your leaving Wagner, Prof, comes as a terrible jolt. I know you must be doing the right thing, but I hate to think of the college without you. I hope it won't mean a return to the inept presidents that preceded you.
As a son of Wagner, I am grateful for what you have done for the school. You preserved its old ideals of high scholarship and ethics, yet gave the college a new vitality that made it even a finer institution. I am also grateful to you,
[Page 2]
Prof, for all you have done for me personally. The counsel you have given me, and the encouragement, have been most helpful.
I hope that your new job will not prevent you from spending time on Staten Island. Both Fay and I would like to have the pleasure of your friendship after the war.
I hate to see you go - but the best of luck in your new work.
Cordially,
Bob Olwig

Dear Prof,
Your long letter, which I am so belatedly acknowledging, was a delightful surprise, and I am grateful for all the news contained therein and even more grateful for the fact that you took time out to write me. I hear from Wagner so seldomly, - not that I should complain, you all hear from me so seldomly.
I was interested to learn from you that Charlie Accettola is in, but did he join the Army or Navy? Last time I was home I ran into him, and he was debating which way to turn. He sort of favored the Navy, but I advised joining the Army, contending he'd get more practice if he were given an assignment in a combat area. In the Navy, when a ship is hit, it's "boom" and then all over - no need for a doctor.
The news about the dean I had heard, but I thought he was planning to go into khaki. His leaving school sure is a great loss for Wagner. I think, though, especially if he gets sea duty, that it will be a great experience for him.
Recently I found a Columbia Journalism alumnus sleeping three beds away from me, but I never run across anyone from Wagner anymore. The last time was in December in Denver. I got into a rather nasty verbal fight with someone in a basketball dressing room - and then found him putting on a sweatshirt on which was emblazoned in green, "Wagner Memorial Lutheran College"! To everyone's amazement we walked off arm in arm. Name was
[Page 2]
[Lumpton], I believe; from N.J., a football player. I think he's overseas now.
I had to laugh at your "knowledge" that I get The Advance regularly. I don't. Don't even see all the articles I write. 'Twas Dan's advice that I don't get the paper. "Don't try to live two lives at once," he said.
It's "Sergeant Olwig" now, by the way. "Technician Fourth Grade" to be more exact. For training I work as a circulating technician in operating rooms at Station Hospital, but right now we've been called out to assist in training some new men.
Plase drop me a line some time again, I am, and regards to Mrs. Stoughton and to Marguerite. By the way, how is my old meteorology professor? I had heard he was ill.
Cordially,
Bob Olwig

H.M.S. Argonaut
British Pacific Fleet
C/O FPO SF CALIF
19 MARCH 1945
Dear "Prof" Stoughton:
Just recently a change of duty came my way quite unexpectedly while on an all to brief leave of twenty-one days. I did not get chance to get home on my leave but I do consider myself rather lucky in being able to see my wife on the West Coast. However, the fortunes of war are quite unpredictable so here I am once again in the Forward Area after having my "stateside" sojourn cuty very short.
At this time "Prof" I just want to give you my change of address and to let you know that my present duty is that of a U.S. Naval Communications Liaison officer with the British Pacific Fleet. As you can well imagine the duty is very
[Page 2]
interesting both from a technical viewpoint and from a purely social aspect of serving with British officers and men. Incidentally my latest travels have taken me to Brisbane and Sydney in Australia and also for a brief visit to India - if this war continues much longer the Far East will be almost as familiar to me as our own Staten Island.
Sorry I must cease so abruptly -
Warmest Regards
Bob
P.S. my address is exactly as shown at the beginning of this letter

JEFFERSON BARRACKS
MISSOURI
Dear Prof Stoughton -
Thank you for your long enlightning letter. It was one of the best I have recieved scince being in camp and brought to me much interesting news..
Let me voice my opinion along with the countless number of others as to the many Ideas you have imparted to us. Your Ideas for allowing books to be sent out and also the address exchange is excellent and is approved by myself as a great thing. I shall of my first opportunity make use of these exclusive features.
I must certainly say that you have had a bit of excitement at Wagner. I can imagine how the Traditional Wagner Spirit rose to unite and efeat the seemingly hopeless task before it. It is that spirit that one acquires at Wagner that lives on in
[Page 2]
him forever. It is that inhereted characteristic that has often stayed with me and spurred me on when times appeared dark.
Your reference plus a reference from one of the other profs were accepted by the board and I have been accepted. It is here that I might use and exert from your letter as of one from George Moyer. "That famous Air Corps physical is all taht stands in my path - I am not quite as sure of my passing a George but I feel reasonably sure of passing.
Due to an outbreak of spinal menengitis the camp has been quarantined and therefore the test has been canceled for a while. After it has been lifted I hope to leave for an airfield and from there to Air School.
So I wich to thank you for the Trouble I've caused you and may you have continued success in your polycies at Wagner.
Yours Scincerly

Dear Pres. Stoughton -
It has been some time since I last wrote of my whereabouts. As you know the new programs mapped out by our armed forces are so fast that one seldom knows how or where he stands.
Since last writing you I have successfuly completed and graduated from The Radio School of the Air. I attained a dual degree one in Radio operating and one in Radio mechanics. I spent some time on our h[-----] both as Radio man and mechanic. I was about to have been sent to gunnery school and promoted to Staff Sargent when I heard of my appointment as a "Flying Cadet."
This was Sept 14 and a few days later I was sent to Nashville t[---] where I officially recieved my
[Page 2]
advancement in rank to cadet. At Nashville we took numerous physical mental and coordination tests for classification as Pilot, Navigator or Pilot. I applied for, and successfuly completed the requirements for Pilot.
It was there along with a number of other young men I was chosen to complete a condensed course of Pre-Flight. This course is ordinarily 10 weeks long but we are attempting to finish it in 19 days. We are therefore on a [--]idid 16 hour a day study system. I'm sure you'd enjoy such a system at Wagner that being the equivalent to what some Wagnerians take per week - all subjects taught are on a colligiate bases with allowances for time and that which the studnet is already familiar.
Socially the Cadet Corps. strives to make each cadet a perfect gentleman and need I say succeds
[Page 3]
The ideals of Christianity and gentlemanerisms taught me at Wagner have given me a decided advantage over the other cadets.
Another boquet for Wagner is that friendships founded at Wagner remain constant and can be found in all active walks of life. To date I have met Pvt. George [Fischer] who is studying Radio at Scott Field and Sgt. Bob [Vomacha], a medical technician in Nashville Tenn. I have also heard of numerous other men in our armed forces who hail from the College on the Hill -
I shall soon be in Primary Flying and shall send you another bulliten of Progress -
Yours Truely
A/C Alfred B. Novak
P.S. I am also interest in keepin my pledge - So if you would tell me who
[Page 4]
is in possession of my pledge card I would be glad to fulful my promise.
I hope you will excuse the writing and spelling as I have just been operated on for a slight injury and am a bit nervous yet. -

CAMP FORREST, TENN.
Wednesday, January, 14, 1942
Dear Prof,
The transcript and supplementary form reached me this evening along with your letter and kind recommendation.
I wish to thank you very much for this wonderful response, and for going out of your way to give my request your personal attention.
It is good to know that through these hectic days, the "Wagner Spirit" remains as of old - an intangible but vital force in our lives, which we all hold dear.
Of course, I hope my attempt to transfer to the Air Corps will be successful, for it will mean a great deal to me. [That famous Air Corps physical examination is all that stands in my path, but it is no small obstacle, as you undoubtedly know.] Pass or fail, I shall know that I have done my best to make the most of my opportunities, and I believe that is what counts.
My best personal regards to you and Mrs. Stoughton and all good wishes to the entire "Wagner Family."
Sincerely yours,
George R. Moyer

c/o FLEET POST OFFICE
SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA
20 September 1944
Dear Prof,
It has been quite some time since I received your last letter, but I've been holding up my correspondence waiting for a somewhat permanent address. I've done quite a bit of traveling about the country since I last wrote from Pearl Harbor and have seen several of the old Wagner boys.
The one whose name was censored out in my last letter was Robt "Doc" '[Blieden?] ex '40 who is a two-striper and was commanding an LST - I think it was 128- He was then just taking on cargo for the Saipan invasion. He's held that rank for quite some time and was expecting to advance to Lieutenant Commander in the near future.
When I returned to San Francisco (an Ensign took over my boat and I was sent back for new construction) I met Jack Cooper in a hotel just as I was checking out. We had dinner together before my train pulled out and really enjoyed rehashing the old days. He is now a Navy chaplain (Lt. j.g.) and was on his way to Pearl Harbor. I'll soon discover if he's still there.
The third chance meeting was with Ens Ed Saul in Salomons Md. He was in training there and left shortly after as engineering officer on an LCI. Later on I met Carl Heilsberg [EM2/c?] and his new wife and George Stepankus. We really had a bull session - It was really good to get together again.
I wonder if I ever told you I'd received a letter from Bob Vogel (ex '38) He joined the Army even before conscription, is now a first Lt., married and is stationed at Fort Knox, Ky. He was expecting to become a father when I heard from him. Should be by now.
[Page 2]
Sept 30
I've been carrying this poor excuse for a letter in my pocket for the past week, intending to re-write it - Somehow time got away from me, and now I've only a few free minutes before sailing, so I either mail this or nothing.
Hope to be able to get around to the hill on the next trip home - Best wishes for the new semester -
Sincerely
Ray Miller

Dear President Stoughton,
Although I may have been very wrong in doing so, I wrote to Dr. Hinman first; about a month ago. At that time I had not actually formulated any ideas as to what I should do in the post-war world. Since then however, I've drawn up in my mind a more definite idea of what I shall do to realize my lifes ambition, namely to preach the Word of God as I see it. I feel there will be a great need for real moral reformers, after this holocaust which now envelops our world. But greater still I feel as if I am promised or consecrated to the Work of the Lord here on this earth.
[Page 2]
My first rather startling statement to make, is that I do not care to re enter Wagner College. My reason for this is maybe you'd say is three fold. 1. I would like to be near my Mother in her last years, for she has sacrificed much for my sake, 2. I would like to be occupied with some sort of gainful employment while attending an extension course at a reputable school, and 3. I would like to get married to an excellent Lutheran girl from my home church. These reasons may appear to be selfish to you in lieu of my lack of time in preparation for this course of life, but I feel they are only justified because I wish to grasp any small happinesses which may come my way.

Altho I do not have the money this present month I expect to commence taking an extension course in the Army, in Philosophy, from the University of California, which has been highly recommended to me. If any credits are due to me from this course, will you kindly accept them at Wagner towards a degree. If in the event you cannot, please inform me. It may take me years to comlete my work, but since I've such an ardent desire to enter the ministry, I hope you'll bear with me. Have resigned myself to the fact that it'll be a tough struggle, but with the girl I hope to marry the road should be smoothed out, at least a little.
If I can possibly find time I'll write to Rev. Hine or Dr. White

concerning the financial situation.
How are Don and Jean coming these days? Don had ought to be entering College soon, eh? Is he going to attend Wagner or some foreign school. (By foreign I do not mean out of this country). Kindly give my regards to Mrs. Stoughton and I hope for the days when we may see much of each other once more.
I am quite well again after two sieges of Malaria. We're somewhere in India, but if you'd like more full details, please write Mother.
Hoping this letter finds you all in excellent health so with God's blessings I remain,
Sincerely,
Bob Meyer
