New Guinea,
January 15, 1944
Dear Doc Stoughton,
Here I am sitting at a writing table in the Education building here in New Guinea. This is the second place I've been in New Guinea. The first place was almost a Garden of Eden, with it's beautiful, shady, coconut palms. We lived in tents at both places and write often in our tents by candle light. Christmas was very impressive in New Guinea, with our Chapel Service, turkey dinner and Red Cross
[Page 2]
package. New Years morning I spent on detail and the afternoon in bed with a terrific headache, result of a dizzy spell.
The trip over was wonderful. We had daily morning and evening devotional Services and our Sunday Chapel Services. The Boat was Dutch and was as "clean as a whistle." The Transport Chaplain in cooperation with the Army Special Service gave us much to enjoy ourselves with.
I've registered with the University of
[Page 3]
California in Berkely, Cal. thru the Armed Forces Institute, for a course in Elementary French. I plan on taking as much as I can. I think that it is a great oportunity for servicemen. It's too bad more don't take advantage of the opportunity.
I guess Wagner is practially empty of men, especially those I know. News from both theatres of war is very good, and lifts up my morale much. I now have become optomistic and expect a fairly easy return

to Wagner.
Words are lacking to complete this page, so I'll close with Best Wishes to all the faculty, the Wagner Student Body, and you and your family.
As always
Your ever faithful student,

Friday
Dear President Stoughton,
Greetings from across the many, many miles separating us. In spirit, however, I'm still very close to Staten Island and to Wagner and my friends there. And I hope to be with you again, soon, with the war all over with and a more permanent peace established than we have ever known.
Quite a few of your "boys" are in the service now, I see by the "Bulletin" and I know you are proud of that. At any rate, I hope we will give you cause to be so. Among others I see that my good
[Page 2]
friend Bob white is now "Ensign Robert White."
Would you be so kind as to send me a transcript of my college record? In the near future I hope to make aplication for cadet training in aviation, and I shall need it for that. This is my first request for a transcript. If there is any charge I shall be happy to forward it to you when you acquaint me with the proper amount. My address is:

Thank you very much for your attention to this matter.

Dear Prof:
Greetings from Deutschland. We have been here for a short time now and are busy pushing the Germans back as fast as possible, having already followed them thru much of Belgium. It's a cold and snowy war, but I keep dry and warm most of the time in spite of the weather.
Last Sunday, at a chapel service in a bombed-out Belgian restaurant, I heard a fine short sermon based on the text "This one thing I do." You can well imagine what a fine experience it was for me. I think I spent the rest of the afternoon reviving memories of those good Wagner days.
Wesley is in the Philippines now - Kenneth is still in Kansas. We are covering all three fronts.
Write when you can, Prof - I haven't heard any Wagner news for a while now.
Sincerely,
Paul V. Rogler

March 2nd 45
(Somewhere in France)
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Stoughton,
Well, I find myself quite some distance from "ole" Wagner. Tis amazing how far a man can travel in such a short period of time. It seems just yesterday, that I was up at school enjoying a pleasant conversation with you. While on the topic of visiting Wagner, I would like to extend my full appreciation for such a marvelous evening. My (excuse) buddies and I frequently reminisce that evening before our departure to the world unknown to us. I reiterate that that night at Wagner will never leave my feeble cranium. If and when this crisis is over I'm
[Page 2]
planning to visit you again. Of course, I'm optimistic about my coming back, but I plan on returning. It really will be a glorious day when all the boys come stompeding home. But that day in the soldiers' eyes seems years away. Yes, in the papers the news looks very bright and promising to the civilians and they take it that the war is practically over. The men over here don't think in the same channels as do the civilian. But I hope their optomism is 100% correct.
I heard yesterday, that Frankie Betancourt has been discharged. I'm glad to hear that. Have any of the other boys been up to the school lately? I sure would like to see or hear
[Page 3]
from Roy Holmstrup. He really is a good boy. If you happened to have his address I'd certainly apreciate it if you will send it to me.
Well, all I can say is that I've seen too much of France in the few months I've been here. Another thing I believe the geography books I studied back in grade school lied because I never thought France was like this.
Duty is waiting so I'd better sign off with, hope to hear from you.
Former student
Frank
P.S. Excuse writing and spelling conditions aren't the best.

UNITED STATES ARMY
Dec. 8, 1942
Dear Prof.
It was indeed a pleasure to receive your letter. When one is away from home those choice bits of gossip about familiar people and places carry with them added zest. They seem to liven a way of living that seems remote even after a mere four weeks in the army. Please don't misunderstand and think for an instant that I dislike the army on the contrary it is a life I am seriously thinking of adopting permanently.
Irv and I are room-mates, we are living in a three room suite with two other chaps. Irv is inclined to be very quiet but for a more considerate, even-tempered and gentlemanly person you could search for without finding his equal.
If the writinig in this letter is not quite legible please credit it to the typhoid and tetanus shots that we had this afternoon.
[Page 2]
Give my regards to the members of your personal family as well as your college family at least those few members that may remember me.
There is really lots to tell about the people of Boston and my fellow classmates. I can't help saying that the people of Boston have been exceedly kind in their recpeiton of service men. They are constantly sending to the detachment invitations to dances, dinners and socials. Last Sunday coming from church a woman invited three of us to eat dinner in a private home in Winchester. They supply transportation both ways. I am only sorry I was unable to accept due to a previous appointment.
Then too another incident I can't help mentioning is the race and class barriers that are bridged in a detachment such as ours. Let me illustrate: a few nights ago I played bridge with an Upstate New Yorker, a chap from Georgia and a colored boy from Washington. I was greatly surprised that the game took place
[Page 3]
and even more so when I walked to the dorm with the boy from Georgia who said "That shore was a mahty fine nigger."
When I get wound up, I'm worse than a woman but then this new life offers such a variety of new experiences that I can't help relating them.
The greatest news of the day, however, is the fact that in the near future I hope to be a father. Edith is well and I am proud of her for the courage she is showing in facing this great task, especially since I am unable to be at her side.
My most cordial greetings to all.
Yours
Henry Raisch
P.S. If you still have the address of Dr. Bartlett I would greatly appreciate you sending same.
P.S. A list of Wagner Alumni of recent years especially those in service might prove a worthy undertaking altho I appreciate the vastness of such a job; especially with the constant change of addresses.

Dear Doctor and Mrs. Stoughton,
This is my new alma mater. So far we haven't done any studying but spend our time drilling etc. This takes up the first six weeks of the course.
I met Ted Gibson five minutes after I had arrived. We see each other quite often.
Regards to all,
Henry

Dear Prof,
I'm enjoying myself immensely as a guest of Uncle Sam, at St. Petersburg, Florida. If you've ever been here, you will appreciate how I feel.
After a few days at Ft. Hayes, Columbus, Ohio, I was put into the Army Air Corps, and shipped south. I, like all the new recruits, took several mental and physical exams. I was fortunate enough to pass a Physics exam, and qualify for a place in Weather Observation. This is the first step, leading to the Meteorology division of the Air Corps. I made good use of your letter of recommendation, and it helped me in trying for this branch of the service. There were four of us selected out of six hundred men, hence I consider myself a pretty lucky guy.
I can't complain about my army life. So far, it has done me a lot
[Page 2]
of good. I feel great - physically, mentally, and morally. The regular routine we have is conducive to that good feeling.
I expect to be sent out of here, but I don't know when. As soon as there is room for me in one of the weather schools I will go. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying Florida, with its wonderful climate, and hoping I can stay for the rest of the winter. Kindest regards to Mrs. Stoughton.
Sincerely,
Hector Pernetti

On the Banks of the Rhine,
Germany - 20 March 1945
Dear Prof,
The February "Bulletin" is at hand, and the news of your leaving Wagner, Prof, comes as a terrible jolt. I know you must be doing the right thing, but I hate to think of the college without you. I hope it won't mean a return to the inept presidents that preceded you.
As a son of Wagner, I am grateful for what you have done for the school. You preserved its old ideals of high scholarship and ethics, yet gave the college a new vitality that made it even a finer institution. I am also grateful to you,
[Page 2]
Prof, for all you have done for me personally. The counsel you have given me, and the encouragement, have been most helpful.
I hope that your new job will not prevent you from spending time on Staten Island. Both Fay and I would like to have the pleasure of your friendship after the war.
I hate to see you go - but the best of luck in your new work.
Cordially,
Bob Olwig

Dear Prof,
Your long letter, which I am so belatedly acknowledging, was a delightful surprise, and I am grateful for all the news contained therein and even more grateful for the fact that you took time out to write me. I hear from Wagner so seldomly, - not that I should complain, you all hear from me so seldomly.
I was interested to learn from you that Charlie Accettola is in, but did he join the Army or Navy? Last time I was home I ran into him, and he was debating which way to turn. He sort of favored the Navy, but I advised joining the Army, contending he'd get more practice if he were given an assignment in a combat area. In the Navy, when a ship is hit, it's "boom" and then all over - no need for a doctor.
The news about the dean I had heard, but I thought he was planning to go into khaki. His leaving school sure is a great loss for Wagner. I think, though, especially if he gets sea duty, that it will be a great experience for him.
Recently I found a Columbia Journalism alumnus sleeping three beds away from me, but I never run across anyone from Wagner anymore. The last time was in December in Denver. I got into a rather nasty verbal fight with someone in a basketball dressing room - and then found him putting on a sweatshirt on which was emblazoned in green, "Wagner Memorial Lutheran College"! To everyone's amazement we walked off arm in arm. Name was
[Page 2]
[Lumpton], I believe; from N.J., a football player. I think he's overseas now.
I had to laugh at your "knowledge" that I get The Advance regularly. I don't. Don't even see all the articles I write. 'Twas Dan's advice that I don't get the paper. "Don't try to live two lives at once," he said.
It's "Sergeant Olwig" now, by the way. "Technician Fourth Grade" to be more exact. For training I work as a circulating technician in operating rooms at Station Hospital, but right now we've been called out to assist in training some new men.
Plase drop me a line some time again, I am, and regards to Mrs. Stoughton and to Marguerite. By the way, how is my old meteorology professor? I had heard he was ill.
Cordially,
Bob Olwig

H.M.S. Argonaut
British Pacific Fleet
C/O FPO SF CALIF
19 MARCH 1945
Dear "Prof" Stoughton:
Just recently a change of duty came my way quite unexpectedly while on an all to brief leave of twenty-one days. I did not get chance to get home on my leave but I do consider myself rather lucky in being able to see my wife on the West Coast. However, the fortunes of war are quite unpredictable so here I am once again in the Forward Area after having my "stateside" sojourn cuty very short.
At this time "Prof" I just want to give you my change of address and to let you know that my present duty is that of a U.S. Naval Communications Liaison officer with the British Pacific Fleet. As you can well imagine the duty is very
[Page 2]
interesting both from a technical viewpoint and from a purely social aspect of serving with British officers and men. Incidentally my latest travels have taken me to Brisbane and Sydney in Australia and also for a brief visit to India - if this war continues much longer the Far East will be almost as familiar to me as our own Staten Island.
Sorry I must cease so abruptly -
Warmest Regards
Bob
P.S. my address is exactly as shown at the beginning of this letter

JEFFERSON BARRACKS
MISSOURI
Dear Prof Stoughton -
Thank you for your long enlightning letter. It was one of the best I have recieved scince being in camp and brought to me much interesting news..
Let me voice my opinion along with the countless number of others as to the many Ideas you have imparted to us. Your Ideas for allowing books to be sent out and also the address exchange is excellent and is approved by myself as a great thing. I shall of my first opportunity make use of these exclusive features.
I must certainly say that you have had a bit of excitement at Wagner. I can imagine how the Traditional Wagner Spirit rose to unite and efeat the seemingly hopeless task before it. It is that spirit that one acquires at Wagner that lives on in
[Page 2]
him forever. It is that inhereted characteristic that has often stayed with me and spurred me on when times appeared dark.
Your reference plus a reference from one of the other profs were accepted by the board and I have been accepted. It is here that I might use and exert from your letter as of one from George Moyer. "That famous Air Corps physical is all taht stands in my path - I am not quite as sure of my passing a George but I feel reasonably sure of passing.
Due to an outbreak of spinal menengitis the camp has been quarantined and therefore the test has been canceled for a while. After it has been lifted I hope to leave for an airfield and from there to Air School.
So I wich to thank you for the Trouble I've caused you and may you have continued success in your polycies at Wagner.
Yours Scincerly
