Dear Prof-
I would like to have been present at the Chapel service when the testimonies to your work at Wagner and in the community were given, for I could have added considerable of my own version to what Martini and others said. Frankly, I don’t care for farewells, but I do believe in recognizing outstanding service such as you have given. Anyone who has the worthy goal which you had, one that required constant striving because it was an ever advancing goal, also deserves recognition, and I’m sure this phase of your life must have received recognition from the speakers, too. I’m sure that your ideal of Christian service, your understanding of people and your practical approach to dealing with people will continue to accomplish much in the new work you have chosen. Despite this, I’m sure education is losing one of its real leaders and it seems to me that it can’t afford such losses now.
The other day I had lunch with Capt. Chris Holmstrup and he spoke of the long chat he and Dorothy had with you. It was good to hear his impressions of you and the college. I was also slightly amused by the present barnstorming of his brother Ray,
[Page 2]
who, he told me, is travelling around the country in a B-17 for no particular purpose. I wonder how much my little extra purchase of war bonds contributes to the expense of such a jaunt.
The family remains well and the children are certainly growing up. Joan now attends a young people’s group meeting each Saturday night where dancing is a main attraction. Lydia and I sit up to wait for her to come home, unless it’s our turn with other fathers, taking alternate turns, to go and fetch her. Betsy finds the children of the “court” on which we live her chief delight. Lydia, I guess, gets a little fed up with the routine of the life here. It’s a combination of war-time tensions and raising a family, I guess, that make up something of a strain. She never tires, however, of the National Art Gallery in Washington.
I’d like to discuss certain aspects of the international situation with you. If any real clash with Russia comes I judge it will be over groups and policies in China and that presents no easy problem to solve. But there are plenty of incidental problems. I am particularly interested in watching Russian policy in Germany. I profoundly hope that some sort of unified organization can be worked out for dealing with Germany so that both the necessary punishment and reconstruction, including education in its broad sense, can go on.
If you’re ever in Washington in your travels, give me a ring at the Pentagon for it doesn’t seem that I’ll get to S.I. soon. Our regards to Hilda and best wishes to you in your new work.
Sincerely,
Harold

FORT EUSTIS, VIRGINIA
May 17, 1942
Dear Mr. Stoughton,
During the campaign I pledged a small sum to Wagner College. Would you please send me a statement of how much is due. Shortly after the campaign, or rather during it, I was inducted into the Army, and am now, after two months, beginning to get caught up on some my personal affairs.
I’ve been sent down to a Coast Artillery replacement training centre for basic training and have been attached to an Anti Aircraft unit. How long I shall remain, I don’t know. My basic training is finished. I have applied for admission to the Officer Candidate’s School at Camp Davis, but haven’t heard yet whether or not I have been accepted. I still have to have a medical exam and an interview before a board of review. If I am accepted I’ll go to Camp Davis for three months of intensive study - when finished I’ll be a ninety day wonder with a second lieutenant commission. That is, I will be, if I am able to stand the gaff — I’m told it’s a pretty rough course of study.
I want to take this opportunity to thank you for suggesting I take that course in trigonometry last winter — even though I didn’t pass, it comes in handy now in taking a refresher course which they give the O.C.S. Candidates.
I should appreciate receiving any copies
[Page 2]
of the bulletin which you may be sending out - I expect I’ll be moving around quite a bit, but I’ll try to keep you posted as to where I am and what’s happening.

Dear Howard:
I was glad to hear from you. I know that you had gone into service a few days after the campaign closed, and did not have a chance to talk to you at all before you left. I hope that you make the officer’s training school, because I think the work will be pleasanter for you in every way.
The situation on your pledge is this: $25.00 pledged; $1.05 paid. If you want to postpone any further payments, feel perfectly free to do so.
Bulletins will come to you whenever they are printed. I am enclosing the last two. There will be no new ones now until October.
Best of greetings to you from everybody here on the campus. Keep me posted as to how everything is going on.
Cordially yours,
C.C. Stoughton,
President.

Fort Eustis, VA
June 8, 1942
Dear Mr. Stoughton,
Thank you so much for your kind letter to me. I imagine a statement was sent to our house on Staten Island, which was not forwarded to me. I shall mail you what is due as soon as we are paid again, when that will be I don’t know, as we are being moved around so much from one unit to another.
I have now been transferred to the graduate camp. Am living in a tent and eating from a mess kit. And enjoying it very much. In a short while I expect to know whether or not I’ve been accepted for Officer’s School or not. I shall keep you posted as to changes in address etc.
Attending church one Sunday I found that the Chaplain was a Wagner Alumnus - Reverend Edmund
[Page 2]
Bosch of the class of 1922, I believe. We have had some interesting conversations since making each other’s acquaintance, and I’ve been much benefitted by his service. He is a very spiritual and live person, who is keenly aware of his responsibilities to his men. I am enclosing a copy of the church bulletin for this past Sunday, thinking that it might be of interest to you.
My new address for a short time will be —
Headquarters Detachment
Third Group
Fort Eustis, Virginia
Sincerely,
Howard

Battery A, 4th Btn
Fort Eustis, Va.
October 21, 1942
Dear Prof,
Thanks ever so much for the copies of the Wagnerian, and also for the Bulletin which you sent on to me. They finally reached me after being sent to several places where I had been.
I have now been assigned to a training battalion here – shall probably stay for a while – although one never knows in the Army. My work is intensely interesting — there is something new each day or some new problem of one of the men in my platoon which has to be settled. All the different jobs that go with being leader of a training platoon keep me busy, but I feel it a wonderful experience.
I should like to continue getting the Wagnerian and the Bulletin from time to time so I’m enclosing my new address – it’s Lt. P.H. Elstad, Battery A. 4th Battalion, Fort Eustis, Virginia.
Harry Montgomery wrote me and sent on his address, so for the record, here is his — Harry Montgomery, Chaplain, 601st F.A. Btn (Pack) Camp Carson Colorado.
Sincerely,
Howard

24 September 1944
France
Dear Prof-
Thank you so much for your kind letter of 27 July. I’m glad I’m in a position to do a little something for Wagner — aside from the moral obligation in a pledge made way back — I only wish it could be more.
Since last writing the news that our unit is in France has been released — since arriving here I’ve seen and visited many of the places I’d always heard about but never expected to see — among them Chartres and Rheims Cathedrals, Fountainebleau and others – somehow one manages to get enough time when near to catch a glimpse even though mostly it’s work and plenty of it. My only hope is that some of the work contributes something to shortening this affair – sometimes I doubt it. Thanks again for your letter - it sort of relieved me to know the check had arrived — sometimes those things get snarled up. Thanks too for the Bulletin — sure appreciate getting it here.
Sincerely,
Howard

28 November 1944
Dear Prof-
Thanks for seeing I get the Bulletin - out here it’s heart warming to know that people back home haven’t forgotten you. The October issue came to-day.
I note from the Bulletin that Wagner is trying to get rid of her indebtedness entirely at this time — seems to me a good idea — while there is more money about.
The Lord has been good to Ruth and myself — and this is by way of letting you know that our small part towards reducing this debt is on the way — small, but nonetheless welcome, I hope.
I’ve got to tell you separately - that is, I can’t send the money with this letter — that goes by the safest way—P.T.A. It takes somewhat longer than Postal money orders or checks, but eventually gets there. However, if in six to eight weeks time, you don’t have the check — will you please let me know, so I can have it traced.
I see that in spite of the war and all the difficulties that must make

for a college like Wagner, she continues to grow — I do hope and pray it continues and I’m sure it will. Soon, I hope I’ll be able to come back to visit all you people and see again the hill and the harbor — one gets so hungry out here for the sights and sounds and smells of home that it amounts to almost an ache, but then you know - you were in the same boat once — pray it won’t be too much longer.
As ever

MADISON M. ESTERLY JR.
60 EAST 42ND STREET
NEW YORK, N.Y.
Dear Dr. Stoughton,
The nature of my letter is to beg a favor of you. Marshall has written that he has made an application for Officers Candidate School to become a 2nd Lieut. of the Air Force. He has all the requirements as far as his education is concerned and has passed all his army tests very high, and along with his application his Commanding Officer has suggested getting one or two letters from prominent men with whom he has been associated. I wondered if you would be so kind as to write one of these letters and would mention that Marshall had been Secretary and Treasurer of the Student-Body and also Secretary of his Fraternity and anything else which you feel you could say, the letter to be addressed to the Commanding Officer of the

I sincerely hope this is not asking too much as I know how busy you are.
Thanking you so much and with best wishes,
I am,

GEIGER FIELD
WASHINGTON
Feb. 11, 1942
Dear Pres. Stoughton,
Many thanks for the fine recommendation you sent me, I certainly appreciate it. I have my mind set on getting a commission and am going to do everything I can to fulfill that wish. There are many fine opportunities at the present time in the Air Corps and I think I can be of more value to the Army in a different capacity than the one in which I am serving at present.
I often think of the many good times I had in school and often wish I could live my College days over again. However I find now with the benefit of a college degree, I am able to contribute more to the defense of my country than I otherwise would be able to do.
Once again thanks for your quick response to my request for a recommendation; I assure you it will be used to the advantage of both my country and myself. Best of luck to you, to Wagner, and the Student Body, and with hope that I may be able to visit my Alma Mater soon again under more peaceful conditions, I remain,
Most sincerely,
Marshall Esterly

UNITED STATES ARMY
Feb. 13, 1943
Dear Dr. Stoughton,
Please excuse me writing to you in pencil, but I am just a little scared of using ink while sitting on my bunk (where I take care of my whole correspondence)
Thank you very much for sending me the letter about the latest developments. I was advised to see my commanding battalion officer. I had discussion with him on the subject and he promised to do what he could about it.
I am still in active communication with a number of Wagner students, in fact I have just finished two letters to my former roommate, Bill Fuhlbruck and to Gene Roth.
I am taking now an eleven week training course for the Medical Corps here in Virginia and I like it as much as I could possibly like any branch of the army.
Respectfully,
George H. Eugel

MARCH FIELD
RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA
4th Mapping Sqaudron
June 22, 1942
Dear Doctor Stoughton:
Salutations to yourself and to Wagner College from our Army Air Forces. It is a long time since I left Wagner officially but I still feel that it is a part of “home”.
One of your letters about Wagner’s current financial campaign was forwarded to me from home. Were you aware of the fact that I am a number of one of our armed forces you might have foreseen what my answer would be.
I realize that it is now imperative that Wagner continue its work in education, both scholastic and religious. Insofar as I would like to be able to do my share of keeping my alma mater going I feel badly that I can’t do so. I regret that I must inform you that at the present time Wagner can not expect any financial aid from me.
At least I can wish you the best of luck in your present endeavor. I note that many Wagnerites besides
[Page 2]
myself are in the army or navy. After we have secured our position Wagner will find that her sons, and possibly now even her daughters, have had a great part in guaranteeing that civilization as we understand it and teach it shall not be destroyed.
With my kindest regards to those of Wagner who might know me I remain,
Very truly yours,
(Corp.) Irving Green
